Summit of the Americas

Date: April 20, 2009
Time: 5:30PM
Place: New York, NY

All the leaders of the Americas and the Caribbean (north, south and Central America) got together in Port of Spain Trinidad for a few days to discuss critical and not so critical issues. The hope is that these leaders would be able to create solutions for the welfare of their citizens. It was a much hyped summit taking place in one of the bigger islands of the Caribbean and the people of this region felt important and did not even try to hide their pride. You Trinidad I reality is a very small inland nation compared to other countries in the world, yes very small and they got this opportunity so the administration embraced it openly. They spent a fortune to accommodate the visiting leaders of their respective countries. My point is while a very big percentage of people is living under the poverty line (twenty percent approximately) in this oil rich country of 1.3 million the government don’t care but would spend five billion to host this event in extravagant style. That is politics and politicians at its best. Yes the world was watching because the United States president and the Venezuelan president were present (yes these two administrations were at it for a while) but if you watched the CNN reports I believe that most of the reporters did not even know where Trinidad was since they kept say Latin America, heck it is in the Caribbean. At the beginning there was so much hype to tackle the enormous problems that exists in this part of the world but strangely enough no one was reporting about any solutions that would be implemented at the end. Leaves one to ask what they really did for those few days at the expense of the taxpaying dollars? I hope we’ll get the answers pretty soon.
